Zen Meditation with Monmouth Zen Circle in Ocean
February 15 @ 9:15 am - 12:00 pm
Monmouth Zen Circle invites you to join us in the practice of Zen. By settling the heart and mind in this very moment, we can bring a little more peace and openness to our lives and our world. Our Soto way emphasizes the daily practice of sitting meditation (zazen) and the integration of formal practice and daily life within the context of a community of practice.
We follow the traditional forms of the Soto school of Zen with a spirit of warmth and inclusion. Everyone interested in meditation, whether brand new, experienced in other traditions, or schooled in formal Zen, is welcome to join our practice.
Our weekly meetings are Saturday mornings from 9:15 to 12:00 in the Community Room at Dean’s Natural Food Market in Ocean NJ, at 1119 Highway 35. These meetings consist of sitting meditation (zazen) for 30 minutes starting at 9:30, followed by 10 minutes of walking meditation (kinhin). Then there is an open discussion, which may include a short talk or reading and open questions and answers. Finally there is another 30 minute period of sitting meditation starting at 11, followed by a short service (chanting).
Once a month on the third Friday our teacher, Kotatsu John Bailes, comes down from Boston to join us. That evening there is a meeting from 6 to 8 pm, and the next day, Saturday, a meeting from 9:15 am to 5 pm. Besides periods of sitting and walking meditation, there is a service, a talk by our teacher, and the opportunity for a private interview with our teacher.
Feel free to come for any part of these meetings. Sitting can be on cushions, chairs, benches, etc.
